Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is DuckSnip and what tools are included in the suite?

DuckSnip is an all-in-one, local-first native screen capture, annotation, and image processing suite built for macOS (Apple Silicon & Intel). Under the hood, it consists of 5 modular, tightly integrated components that run on demand:

  • Smart Screen Capture (DuckSnip Core): Powered by native macOS ScreenCaptureKit, it captures regions, windows, or full screens with minimal latency and decodes on-screen QR codes in an instant.
  • GPU-Accelerated Markup Editor (DuckSnip Editor): Delivers fluid 60 FPS Metal-powered annotation. Includes Blur/Pixelate tools for redacting sensitive information, arrows, shapes, step numbering, layer management, and emojis.
  • Visual History & Archive Manager (DuckSnip History): Archives your captures in a fast, local SQLite (GRDB) database. Features a Floating History Browser, QuickLook previews, and Drag & Drop support.
  • On-Device OCR Engine (DuckSnip OCR Helper): Uses the native macOS Vision framework to extract copyable text from any on-screen image, video, or PDF in seconds without requiring an internet connection.
  • On-Device AI Image Upscaler (DuckSnip AI Upscale Helper): Enhances and upscales low-resolution captures locally on your Mac using CoreML and RealESRGAN models without sending your images to external cloud servers.

2. Why should I use DuckSnip instead of installing 4 or 5 separate apps?

Running separate utilities for screenshots, OCR, AI upscaling, and clipboard/history management consumes extra system memory and fragments your workflow. DuckSnip unifies these tools into a single experience:

  • Clean Menu Bar Experience: Replace multiple menu bar utilities with a single, minimal DuckSnip icon.
  • Unified Workflow & Shortcuts: Capture a screen region and immediately extract text (OCR), upscale with AI, or annotate within the same workflow—no moving files between apps.
  • Smart On-Demand RAM Management: Thanks to its modular multi-process architecture, helper components (Editor, OCR, AI Upscaler) launch only when triggered and release system memory (RAM) once you close them.

3. How is DuckSnip priced, and what is included in the free version?

DuckSnip offers a transparent Freemium model. You can download the app, use core workflows right away, and explore advanced modules before deciding to upgrade:

  • Free Core Features (No Watermarks): Screen capture (region, window, full screen), the full-featured Markup Editor (including Blur/Pixelate, layers, and shapes), on-device OCR & QR decoding, and History Management (up to 10 recent items) are included at no cost in the base version with no watermarks on exported captures.
  • DuckSnip Pro / Premium (Mac App Store In-App Purchase): You can also try advanced features in the free version. Upgrading removes trial watermarks from AI Upscaling and Custom Text/Code Card Themes, and unlocks Unlimited History & Pinning. Upgrades are processed securely through the Mac App Store (In-App Purchase), offering Monthly, Yearly, or one-time (Lifetime) plan options.

4. What macOS permissions does DuckSnip use, and how is my data handled?

DuckSnip is built on a local-first architecture—your screenshots, annotations, and extracted OCR text are processed on your Mac and are not transmitted to external data-collection servers (the optional translation feature uses the built-in macOS Translation framework). Depending on the features you use, DuckSnip works with standard macOS system permissions:

  • Screen Recording Permission (ScreenCaptureKit): Used by the native macOS ScreenCaptureKit API when capturing on-screen regions, windows, or text/QR codes. Screen capture is only active when you explicitly trigger a capture action or shortcut.
  • User-Selected File Access (App Sandbox): Used via the standard macOS file picker when you choose to open a local image in the Editor or save captures to a custom folder on your Mac.

5. Where is my data stored on my Mac, and how can I manage or clear my local archive?

In accordance with macOS App Sandbox standards, DuckSnip keeps all application data organized within dedicated, isolated system containers rather than scattering files across your drive:

  • Isolated App Sandbox Storage: Your local data (capture history, thumbnails, and the SQLite database) is stored on your Mac inside standard macOS App Sandbox and App Group containers (~/Library/Containers/ and Group Containers).
  • Simple Archive & Storage Control: By macOS design, sandbox containers are preserved during app updates so your archive remains intact. You can customize retention limits or reset your local archive anytime via the in-app "Clear History" option, or remove the sandbox container folder when uninstalling the app.

Your data stays on your Mac.

Every capture and recognized text is processed locally on your device.
